Hydroformed modules to connect standard handrail tubes into a handrail system without any welding needed. With these modules the principle of hydroforming is apparently reversed. The modules do not broaden but narrow in the middle and become bigger at their ends.

Background: In fall 2004, for the first time, a cooperation between the Bauhaus University and a Technical University was launched to work in an interdisciplinary manner on the development of a new product family. Two engineering students from TU Darmstadt and four product design students from the Bauhaus-University of Weimar collaborated on the project. The team of six students was assigned the task of working on the topic of handrail systems. The aim was to design a product family and realize a prototype. The whole cycle of concept, design, simulation of data, construction of the product and the tool as well as the actual manufacturing of tool and product was to be concluded in the time span of five months. The handrail system should be produced with the technology of hydroforming. The different hydroformed parts connect standard handrail tubes without any welding needed. The results of the cooperation were exhibited and explained in a lecture in April 2005 on the industrial fair ‘Hannover Messe’.
